Wedding flowers: the bridal bouquet and decoration

A bridal bouquet and the flowers for your venue are not ordered the way you would order a birthday bouquet. Here are the seasonal flowers worth knowing, how far ahead to book and the six services we compared for a wedding in Switzerland.

A wedding means two quite separate flower orders. First the bridal bouquet, round, cascading or country style, along with the groom’s buttonhole. Then the decoration: table centrepieces, ceremony flowers, an arch and dressing the reception room. The two sides are handled differently and sit on different budgets. We compared the online florists operating in Switzerland to work out which ones can genuinely see you through the big day, and which are most useful around the event.

The single most useful rule: book several months ahead if your wedding falls in the busy season, from May to September. Set up a meeting or a trial to confirm shades, shapes and the varieties available. On budget, a made to measure bridal bouquet often runs into several hundred francs, and full decoration considerably more depending on how many tables you have. Always ask for a written quote.

Which flowers to give

Which flowers to choose for a wedding

Your wedding date dictates the choice of varieties. Here are the bouquet shapes, the seasonal flowers and the decoration items to go through with your florist.

The bridal bouquet

Three classic shapes that set the tone for the whole day.

  • Round bouquet the most classic shape
  • Cascading bouquet a longer line
  • Country style bouquet a natural look
  • Groom’s buttonhole match it to the bouquet

Seasonal flowers

The time of year you marry decides which varieties are available.

  • Peonies May and June
  • Garden roses in spring
  • Ranunculus in spring
  • Dahlias late summer

Decorating the venue

The heaviest item on any quote.

  • Table centrepieces depends on the number of tables
  • Ceremony flowers to agree with the venue
  • Floral arch the most visible piece
  • Dressing the room to be priced separately

Around the big day

The orders a delivery network can handle.

  • Congratulations to the couple delivery networks
  • Flowers for guests ordered remotely
  • Eucalyptus available all year
  • Gypsophila available all year
Good to know. Book your florist several months ahead if you are marrying between May and September: that is the busiest stretch of the year. Ask for a meeting or a trial so you can see the bouquet before the day itself, and leave with a written quote that separates the bouquet, the buttonhole and each decoration item.

Our advice

Our advice for your situation

Three scenarios come up again and again. Here is how we would handle them.

You are marrying in peak season. For a date between May and September, contact a florist several months in advance: it is wedding season and workshops fill up fast. Set a meeting, ask for a trial bouquet and have the bridal bouquet, the buttonhole and the table centrepieces priced separately.

You are starting from seasonal flowers. Let the date guide the varieties. Peonies arrive in May and June, garden roses and ranunculus cover the spring, and dahlias take over in late summer. Eucalyptus and gypsophila are available all year and tie the bouquet and the tables together.

You are not in the country. To congratulate a couple or send flowers to guests, the big flower relay networks do the job, including from abroad. For the day itself, though, go with a workshop that handles events, such as Fleuriot in Geneva or Kanel across French speaking Switzerland.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a bridal bouquet cost?
Expect several hundred francs for a made to measure bridal bouquet. Full decoration costs considerably more, depending on the number of tables and the scale of the ceremony flowers. Prices come by quote, so have every item itemised before you sign off.
When should you book a florist for a wedding?
Several months ahead, especially if your wedding falls in the May to September season. Use that time to arrange a meeting or a trial, confirm the shape of the bouquet (round, cascading or country style) and match the groom’s buttonhole.
Which flowers for a wedding in May or June?
In May and June, peonies are in season. Spring also brings garden roses and ranunculus. In late summer, turn to dahlias. Eucalyptus and gypsophila stay available all year and work well in a bouquet as much as in a table centrepiece.
Can you order wedding flowers online?
Yes for guests’ flowers or to congratulate a couple: the large delivery networks cover Switzerland and international destinations. For the bouquet on the day, we would go with a workshop that does event work, with a meeting and a trial, such as Fleuriot in Geneva or Kanel across French speaking Switzerland.
How do you plan the floral decoration for the tables?
Table centrepieces are the main item and their price depends on the number of tables. Add the ceremony flowers, the arch and dressing the room if the venue calls for it. Eucalyptus and gypsophila act as the thread running through it all, all year round.
