Sunday 9 May 2027

In Switzerland, Mother’s Day falls on the second Sunday in May: Sunday 9 May 2027, then Sunday 14 May 2028, Sunday 13 May 2029 and Sunday 12 May 2030. As it is a Sunday, plan for a Saturday delivery or pick a service that delivers on Sundays, and order at least a few days ahead.

  • 2028Sunday 14 May 2028
  • 2029Sunday 13 May 2029
  • 2030Sunday 12 May 2030

The date lands in the same spot on the calendar every year: the second Sunday in May. Switzerland shares that marker with Germany, Austria, Belgium, Italy and the United States. The next one is Sunday 9 May 2027. That regularity makes planning easier, but it hides a detail many people discover too late: Sunday is still a day when plenty of delivery services simply do not run, in the cities as much as in the countryside.

Franco-Swiss families know the other trap: in France, Mother’s Day falls on the last Sunday in May, or the first Sunday in June when the last Sunday in May coincides with Whitsun. Two dates, two orders to place if your relatives live on either side of the border. So we have gathered here the calendar markers, the seasonal flowers and the services that genuinely deliver in Switzerland.

Which flowers to give

Which flowers to give in May

May opens the peony season while still leaving room for the last of the tulips. Here is what works well for a delivered bouquet or for a potted plant that stays.

May flowers

What florists in French-speaking Switzerland have to hand at this time of year.

  • Peonies start of the season
  • Ranunculus tight petals, pastel tones
  • Roses a safe bet
  • Late tulips the last of spring

Potted plants that last

For a mum who keeps her plants long after the day itself.

  • Potted hydrangea lasts for weeks
  • Potted orchid minimal care
  • Flowering plant to repot carries on on the balcony
  • Balcony rose bush to plant afterwards

Bouquet formats

The same budget can give a completely different effect.

  • Seasonal bouquet hand-tied
  • Round pastel bouquet neat lines
  • Country-style bouquet garden-picked look
  • Delivered bouquet CHF 50 to CHF 100

Colours that work

A bright May palette rather than heavy contrasts.

  • Powder pink soft and easy to read
  • Cream white very luminous
  • Mixed pastels spring feel
  • Fresh foliage adds volume
Good to know. Delivery slots fill up in the week before, as demand is high right across Switzerland. We recommend ordering at least a few days ahead and aiming for Saturday delivery, unless the service does deliver on Sundays. Budget CHF 50 to CHF 100 for a delivered bouquet and add a handwritten note.

Our advice

Three situations and what we would do

Every set-up has its solution. Here are the three cases people ask us about most often before the second Sunday in May.

You remember on the Saturday. All is not lost. In Geneva and Lausanne, some workshops deliver within a few hours on Saturdays, which still gets you there in time for Sunday 9 May 2027. Elsewhere, aim for Saturday delivery, since most services do not run on Sundays.

Your mother lives outside French-speaking Switzerland. Allow an extra day. Workshops in French-speaking Switzerland deliver next day to the rest of the country, and the flower relay networks rely on a florist close to where she lives. Order early in the week to keep a choice of Saturday slots.

Family on both sides of the border. Note two separate dates. In Switzerland it is the second Sunday in May. In France, the day falls on the last Sunday in May, or the first Sunday in June when that last Sunday coincides with Whitsun. Two separate orders will stop a bouquet arriving a fortnight too early.

Frequently asked questions

When is Mother’s Day in Switzerland in 2027?
Sunday 9 May 2027. The rule is the second Sunday in May, so next come Sunday 14 May 2028, Sunday 13 May 2029 and Sunday 12 May 2030. The 2026 edition, Sunday 10 May 2026, has already passed.
Why isn’t Mother’s Day on the same date in France?
Because the two countries follow different rules. Switzerland goes with the second Sunday in May, like Germany, Austria, Belgium, Italy and the United States. France celebrates on the last Sunday in May, or the first Sunday in June if it coincides with Whitsun.
Can you have flowers delivered on a Sunday in Switzerland?
Some services offer it, but many do not deliver that day. The simplest solution is still Saturday delivery, with a note announcing what follows. If you are set on the Sunday itself, check the option when ordering and book early.
What budget should you allow for a delivered bouquet?
The usual budget sits between CHF 50 and CHF 100 for a delivered bouquet. At the top of that range you gain volume and seasonal flowers such as peonies. Slots fill up in the week before, so ordering early protects your budget too.
Which flowers should you give for Mother’s Day?
In May, peonies come into season, and ranunculus, roses and the last tulips round out a bouquet nicely. If you would rather give something that lasts, a potted hydrangea or orchid keeps going far longer than cut flowers.
